Contains the following types of materials: photographs, photo albums. Covers the following wars: World War II (WWII), Korean War, Vietnam War, Cold War. General description of the collection: The Herbert B. Powell photograph collection consists of photos which span the career of Herbert B. Powell from childhood images through his retirement as a full general in January 1963. Most photos deal with his series of commands and activities; following promotion to major general in 1954; and assignment as commanding general, The Infantry Center and School. Subsequent commands were as deputy commanding general for Reserve Forces; commanding general 3rd U.S. Army; and commanding general, U.S. Continental Army Command. Many of the photos deal with his numerous visits to Army installations in the U.S. and abroad and numerous social functions.

Herbert Butler Powell was a United States (U.S.) Army officer. He was commissioned into the Army in 1926. During World War II (WWII), he served in the European Theater of Operations (ETO); was a battalion commander of the 32nd Infantry, 1941-1942; was chief of staff (CofS), 75th Infantry Division, 1943-1945, and was deputy, G-1 First (1st) Army Europe, 1945-1946. After the war, he was an advisor to the Pennsylvania National Guard, 1947 and served with the Second (2nd) Army, 1947-1948. He command...
